For many travelers, Northern California might not be the first destination that comes to mind when seeking sunny beaches. It’s often overshadowed by its quintessential Southern California counterpart. However, Northern California harbors a treasure trove of coastal wonders, replete with charming towns, stunning natural landscapes, and, surprisingly, some of the state’s warmest beaches. This extensive guide is your ticket to the sandy shorelines that defy the Golden State’s “cold water” reputation, appealing to beach lovers and adventurers eager for new frontiers in Northern California’s beach landscape.

Picture this: smooth sand stretching out beneath your feet, the Pacific Ocean’s rhythmic waves lapping at the shoreline, and the warmth of the sun’s rays as you bask in the beauty of the day. That’s exactly the experience that awaits at these often unsung beaches.

Our Journey to Northern California’s Warm Beaches

We’re setting off on a coastal expedition, ready to explore these hidden oases. Whether you’re a local looking for a new spot to soak up the sun or a traveler in search of an off-the-beaten-path escape, Northern California’s warm beaches do not disappoint. Our adventure takes us from the oak-dappled coastal paths of Sonoma County to the iconic bridge views of Marin, and further north to the majestic shores of Mendocino.

Unearthing the Warmth of the Golden State Coast

California’s beaches are as diverse as the state itself. The expansive coastline offers a mosaic of experiences, ranging from the cool, foggy coves of Big Sur to the balmy, azure bays frequented by Santa Barbarians. Our focus is on discovering Northern California’s unique warm-water beaches, a departure from the region’s cooler waters that are often a product of the California Current.

Preparing for Your Northern California Coastal Adventure

Before you set out, it’s crucial to be prepared. Temperatures on the California coast can fluctuate, and the shoreline environment can be as rugged as it is serene. From packing the right gear to knowing the tides and weather reports, we’ll ensure you’re ready for a day of bliss on the sands.

The Beaches That Warm the Soul, and Body

A sunny beach in Northern California with people enjoying the sand and a majestic mountain in the backdrop.

With the checklist ticked off, it’s time to unveil our destination picks, where not only the vistas will take your breath away, but the in-water experiences are uniquely inviting.

Bodega Bay: Secrets of the Russian River Meet the Pacific

Our first stop is Bodega Bay, a coastal enclave forever etched in cinematic history thanks to Hitchcock’s “The Birds.” Beyond the drama of Hollywood, the bay provides tranquil expanses of sandy beaches, where the nearby Russian River’s freshwater currents help warm the coastal waters to a comfortable degree.

Stinson Beach: Marin’s Hidden Warm-Water Gem

In the shadow of Mount Tamalpais, Stinson Beach beckons with its golden sands and famous pastel-striped lifeguard towers. Known for its relative warmth and water calm enough for swimming, Stinson is a local favorite, often busier than its secluded location would imply.

Doran Regional Park and Indian Beach, Bayside Warmth

The Doran Regional Park is a marine nature reserve and a haven for all types of water lovers. The shores here, including scenic Indian Beach, enjoy the sheltered warmth of Bodega Bay, perfect for tide pooling, and even seasonal whale watching.

San Gregorio State Beach: Where Northern Cali’s Warmth Begins

San Gregorio State Beach, starting point of the iconic Highway 1, is a sun-drenched strip where the eponymous creek meets the sea. Its relative privacy and warmer waters make it a delightful retreat away from the Bay’s urban sprawl.

Pescadero State Beach: A Surfer’s Paradise and Swimmer’s Dream

Pescadero State Beach is part of a magnificent expanse of protected coastline. Here, the beaches are backed by towering cliffs, and the currents warmed by the sun are known to be gentle, appealing to swimmers and surfers of varying skill levels.

Mendocino County’s Jewels: Navarro and Russian Gulch

North of the fabled wine country, Mendocino County harbors two striking beaches, Navarro and Russian Gulch State Park. These coastal escapes revel in the warmth of the Klamath River’s influence, offering swathes of sand, tide pools, and the chance to kayak in calmer waters.

Going Local: Insider Tips and Experiences

Our adventure doesn’t end with the mere surf and sun. To truly savor these warmer coastal locales, we divulge insider secrets, including where to find the best seafood shacks, local watering holes, and the hidden sights that affirm these are truly hidden gems.

Savoring the Local Flavors and Beachside Vistas

No coastal escape is complete without sampling the local cuisine. In towns like Jenner and Duncans Mills, you’ll discover seafood spots offering fresh catches with unparalleled views of the Pacific. We’ll steer you toward the right direction for that perfect post-beach meal.

Exploring the Coastal Villages and Their Charms

Each beach we’ve visited is complemented by a nearby village, rich in California coastal charm. From boutique shopping in Stinson to the artistic enclaves of Mendocino, we’ll guide you on how to make the most out of your visit and support the local community.

What California beach has the warmest water?

Among the myriad of beaches California has to offer, Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County is often celebrated for having some of the warmest waters. Nestled within the protective arms of the San Luis Bay, Avila Beach’s unique geographical position shields it from the prevailing northern winds. This natural phenomenon, combined with its southern exposure, allows the beach to soak up the sun throughout the day, warming the coastal waters significantly. It’s a haven for swimmers and sunbathers alike, who flock to its shores for the balmy temperatures and the inviting, clear waters — a truly exceptional spot in California’s extensive coastal tapestry.

Are there any warm beaches in the Bay Area?

While the Bay Area is more renowned for its dramatic coastal cliffs and brisk ocean breezes, there are indeed pockets of warmth along its shores where beach goers can enjoy relatively warmer waters. Alameda Beach, east of San Francisco, is a prime example. Sheltered from the cold currents of the Pacific Ocean, the waters here can feel surprisingly warm, especially during the summer months. Another gem is the small but charming Muir Beach in Marin County, tucked away in a secluded cove that often enjoys sunnier, warmer conditions than its more exposed neighbors. These beaches provide a respite from the typically cooler Northern California waters, offering a more inviting swim or paddle for those looking to dip their toes in without the shiver.

Warmest beach in california in may

In the quest for the warmest beach in California during May, one’s compass points decidedly towards the southern shores. Coronado Beach in San Diego stands out as a premier destination. May, straddling the line between spring and summer, brings about a noticeable warming trend in Southern California, and Coronado Beach benefits significantly from this seasonal shift. Its expansive stretches of sand become a golden canvas under the intensifying sun, offering not just warmth but also an iconic view with the historic Hotel Del Coronado as a backdrop. The Pacific waters here, caressed by the early summer sun, are invitingly warm, making it an ideal spot for early-season swimmers, surfers seeking gentle waves, and families looking for a sun-soaked getaway. It’s the mix of radiant sunshine, tepid waters, and the beach’s picturesque setting that crowns Coronado Beach as a top pick for the warmest beach escapade in California during May.

Final Thoughts: The Warm Beaches of Northern California Await

In conclusion, Northern California’s warm beaches are a testament to the state’s coastal diversity. From Sonoma’s sunlit shores to the remote serenity of Mendocino’s waterfront, these beaches offer a unique and often unexpected experience. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a day trip, these warm-water retreats beckon with the promise of adventure, relaxation, and an unmatched connection to the California coast.

With our guide in hand, you’re now equipped to venture forth and bask in the warmth of the North California sun. Immerse yourself in this coastal paradise, and discover a new appreciation for the beauty that lies beyond the fog. Pack your sunscreen, your spirit of adventure, and an eagerness to explore — the warm beaches of Northern California are calling.

If you only have time for a shorter bike tour down the California coast, the coastline from the Monterey Peninsula through the Big Sur area and down to SLO County plays like a highlight reel of the best elements of the coast. The first part of a Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour focuses on the hilly, but spectacular Big Sur coast, with its rugged coastline and towering redwoods. South of Big Sur, cycling through San Luis Obispo County offers a diverse palette of marine wildlife viewing, historic missions, sandy beaches and surfers plying the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Adding some time south of San Luis Obispo will bring you into the wine country of the Edna Valley.

Overview – Montery to San Luis Obispo via Big Sur bike tour

Standard Itinerary: Monterey to San Luis Obispo

4 Days / 155 Total Miles / Daily Average = 39 Miles

*** Please see John’s Tour Thoughts and Mileage Calculator for Alternate Itineraries for information about tours within the Monterey to Santa Barbara Zone for different start/end points and/or different numbers of days and mileages. ***

Day One – Monterey to Big Sur – 45 miles (elevation +2748/-2530 ft)

The Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour begins with a side trip out to scenic 17 Mile Drive to experience the storied golf courses of Pebble Beach. You’ll continue through Carmel, enjoying its white sandy beach and beautiful mission. South of Carmel, you’ll enter the fabled Big Sur coastline, home to some of the most spectacular coastal scenery anywhere in the world. Here Highway One is often carved out of cliffs and ridges high above the Pacific Ocean with waves crashing below on rocky sea stacks. After crossing photogenic Bixby Bridge and climbing to Hurricane Point, today’s bike ride finishes a short distance inland among the redwoods in the town of Big Sur.

Day Two – Big Sur to Ragged Point – 49 miles (elevation +5043/-4941 ft)

Get ready for an epic full day of biking the Big Sur coast! Right off the bat you’ll tackle the biggest hill of the Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour as you cycle above the Big Sur River past colorful cafes and more redwoods before descending back toward the ocean. Rugged and remote coastline dominates the rest of the day, with numerous state parks offering short hikes to waterfalls and panoramic views of the Pacific. After cycling a final set of hills, you’ll enjoy a well earned rest at the Ragged Point Inn, perched on a bluff high above ocean.

Day Three – Ragged Point to Cambria – 22 miles (elevation +937/-1202 ft)

After descending from Ragged Point the coastal route in northern SLO County features more forgiving terrain, but still encompasses expansive ocean views as you pass by historic Hearst Ranch and Hearst Castle. Just south of Piedras Blancas lighthouse, the largest elephant seal colony in North America is a must-see stop. Home for the evening is the charming seaside village of Cambria, featuring numerous art galleries and restaurants.

Day Four – Cambria to San Luis Obispo (SLO) – 39 miles (elevation +1456/-1273 ft)

South of Cambria the Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour route veers inland for short while before returning to the coast just north of Cayucos, a classic beach town with a pier, a huge sandy beach and surfers plying the waves just offshore. Our route hugs the coast from Cayucos south to Morro Bay, which is a fishing village with a scenic harbor area. From Morro Bay to SLO you’ll skirt the edge of wildlife rich Morro Bay National Estuary before cutting inland for some hilly but very scenic cycling. SLO (voted happiest town in North America!) features an historic mission and a vibrant walkable downtown area.
Big Sur Coast

**Please note that all mileages and elevation gain/loss data (in feet) are approximate only and will vary according to hotel location and actual routes ridden.**

John’s Tour Thoughts

  • If you want to cycle through a wine country area, the Edna Valley lies just south of SLO and is perfect to explore by bike with an extra day at the end of the itinerary. You could do it as a loop ride out of San Luis Obispo, or end up in the beach town of Pismo Beach.
  • Three day itineraries from the Monterey Peninsula to SLO County are also possible. Options include combining Day Two and Three or combining Day Three and Four in the standard itinerary above.
  • You can also do a three day itinerary with distances more in the 25-45 miles per day range by starting in Carmel instead of Monterey, staying the first night in Big Sur (26 miles), the next night in Lucia (24 miles) or Gorda (37 miles) and finishing in Cambria (47 miles from Lucia or 34 miles from Gorda).
  • If the hills and riding conditions of Big Sur are not your cup of tea, but you still want some more spectacular coastal scenery, consider starting your bike tour in Ragged Point. The coastal scenery south of Ragged Point down to Morro Bay is still quite dramatic, but the terrain is much more forgiving. For more details of tours that start at Ragged Point, please see the SLO County or SLO to Santa Barbara itinerary zone pages. Ben – please do hyperlinks to the SLO County and SLO to Santa Barbara pages.
  • If you want to focus on beach areas, altering the itinerary for overnight stays in Cayucos, Avila Beach and/or Pismo Beach will fit the bill nicely.
  • For those looking for longer daily mileages, a two day itinerary from the Monterey Peninsula to SLO County is recommended.
  • For long distance California Coast bike tours we ALWAYS recommend going from north to south (one way) due to prevailing winds along the coast from the north and northwest.

Adding Layover/Rest Days

Interesting layover days on our Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour can be made in the following locations:

  • Big Sur. This is the best layover spot for hiking. Amazing coastal hikes as well as hikes into the redwoods are available at Andrew Molera State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
  • Cambria. There is quite a selection of art galleries, fine restaurants and wine tasting available in Cambria. Hearst Castle is just a few miles north. Try kayaking in San Simeon Cove with Sea For Yourself. There are also numerous hiking trails in and around Cambria, including San Simeon State Park as well as some really nice inland valleys just north and south of town that are great to explore by bike.
  • San Luis Obispo (SLO). This diverse town offers plenty of galleries and restaurants in its award-winning downtown area. The Edna Valley stretches south of town and offers numerous winery tasting rooms and great cycling.

Traffic, Road Conditions and Terrain

Traffic along the Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour route is highly variable. Some stretches are on remote roads that have little to no traffic. Much of the cycling route is on Highway One which has differing traffic volumes on different portions. Highway One also has highly variable shoulders with some stretches (especially through Big Sur coast) that have little to no shoulder. One short section of the cycling (between Cayucos and Morro Bay) is actually on freeway, but this section has a large shoulder. Summer tends to see the heaviest traffic on Highway One. However, motorists are used to seeing lots of cyclists along the route and are normally courteous. Cyclists doing the Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour should be comfortable riding with traffic for portions of the tour.

The terrain for the Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour route is also highly variable. Highway One from Carmel south to Ragged Point (75 miles) is quite hilly. There is very little level riding on this stretch of coast and the vast majority of this section is either climbing or descending. There are two climbs on the Big Sur coast that are just over 2 miles long and gain almost 1000 feet each. South of Ragged Point the terrain in SLO County is much more forgiving and features longer stretches of relatively terrain level with a few hills mixed in. Each day of the Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour itinerary has the elevation gain and loss (in feet) listed. Cyclists contemplating doing the Monterey to San Luis Obispo bike tour should be comfortable with riding hilly terrain.

Different Routes within the Zone

Some very interesting itineraries combining coastal and inland areas between Monterey and SLO in longer loops are possible. One of our favorites is a four day ride we did in one October for our anniversary. We call this one “Big Sur Back of Beyond.” The start is usually Cayucos, but could also be any of the nearby coastal towns (Cambria, Morro Bay or Los Osos). The first day is a relatively short ride (but with a big climb and descent) over the coastal range to Paso Robles, home to rapidly growing winery region. On Day Two, the route weaves northwest through isolated ranchland and between Lake San Antonio and Lake Nacimiento before winding up at a really unique lodge (called The Hacienda) in a spectacular location overlooking an original California mission.
SLO County cycling

Day Three is our personal favorite as it explores the wild backside of the mountains of Big Sur as you climb through oak savannas and then more steeply along the headwaters of the Nacimiento River. From the summit there is a thrilling seven mile descent to the Big Sur coast. Overnight lodging could be in Gorda or at Ragged Point. The last day finishes along the coast south to your starting point.

We’ve also set up a tour for a much longer loop starting in coastal northern SLO County, heading north and inland via Paso Robles, the Salinas River Valley and Carmel Valley Road to the Monterey Peninsula, then down the coast via the traditional route to SLO County. The whole loop is about 300-325 miles.

Start and End Transportation

Monterey Peninsula

The Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) is very close to Monterey and is served by several major airlines. There are flights to Monterey from San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Denver. The nearest major airport to Monterey is San Jose (SJC). Monterey Airbus picks up at the San Jose airport (SJC) and drops off in downtown Monterey. Shuttle time is usually 1.5 hours. If you are flying into San Francisco (SFO), Monterey Airbus also picks up there and drops off in downtown Monterey. Shuttle time is usually 2-2.5 hours.

While it is possible take Amtrak to Monterey, the Amtrak route to Monterey usually involves a transfer to a bus in nearby Salinas.

If you are coming from southern California to Monterey before the bike tour, we can often offer a complimentary shuttle from SLO to Monterey the day the tour starts. It is often easier and cheaper to get to SLO from Los Angeles or Santa Barbara via Amtrak than it is to fly or take Amtrak from either Los Angeles or Santa Barbara to Monterey.

San Luis Obispo Area

Similar to Monterey, San Luis Obispo has a regional airport (SBP) quite near town, although it is smaller and currently served by only two airlines (United and US Air). There are non-stop flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix. San Luis Obispo is also well served by Amtrak and has several trains/buses per day north toward the San Francisco Bay Area south toward Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Many people assume you can rent a car in most of the towns in SLO County, but this is not the case. There are no places to rent cars along the northern SLO County coast (i.e. Cambria, Cayucos, Morro Bay) until you get to the town of SLO itself, where most major national car rental companies are represented.

The post Getting in and Out of a Kayak appeared first on Bike Tours California.

]]>
Before you can learn how to kayak, you must first learn how to get in and out of a kayak. Getting in and out of a kayak can be tricky, but we’re sure that after a little practice you’ll figure it out quickly. Simply put, there are three different ways you’re likely to enter a kayak – from shore, from the dock, or from deep water. Each option has its own advantages and challenges.

How to get into your kayak from shore

Getting into your kayak from shore is much easier, especially for those learning to kayak. Whether it’s a lakeshore, seashore, or waterfront, the best way to start is to move your kayak as close to the shoreline as possible. You can then sit in the kayak and use your hands to submerge yourself in the water until you float on the surface. If you’re worried about scratching the hull on land, move the kayak to shallow water and climb in. Simply sit in the kayak on the seat and sit down quickly, placing your feet last.

How to get into the kayak from the dock

Docks are convenient places to get into your kayak, but getting it off requires a little finesse. Try these steps to help:

  • Lower your kayak from the dock to the surface of the water, making sure the kayak is kept parallel to the dock.
  • Position the paddle so that it is within easy reach of the seat. You can also hold your kayak in an offset position by placing either end of the paddle on the kayak and dock.
  • Keep in mind that the taller you are, the more difficult it will be to get into the kayak. This means you will want to sit on the lowest point of the dock, as close to the kayak as possible.
  • When you sit on the edge of the dock, first lower your feet into the kayak. Then quickly position your body toward the front of the kayak and lower yourself into the seat.

Want to make it even easier? Consider a kayak launch docking system – they are designed to make kayak boarding, kayak launching and re-docking much more stable and much easier for kayakers of any skill level.

How to get into a kayak from deep water

There may be occasions where you will need to enter a kayak from deep water. This is probably the most difficult way to enter a kayak, but with patience it can be done. The most important thing is to keep your kayak steady between each movement you make.

Here’s how you can do it:

  • First, place one hand on the side of the kayak closest to you and the other hand on the opposite side so that your arm extends through the hole in the seat.
  • Pull yourself up on the kayak so that your belly button is above the seat. Your feet will still be halfway in the water.
  • Then turn around to get your butt on the seat. Your feet will still be dangling in the water, but you should now have most of your body in the kayak.
  • Make sure the kayak is stable, pull your legs up and place them in front of you.

The instructions for getting out of the kayak are easy to remember – just follow the steps in reverse order. Once ashore, submerge your kayak in shallow water or as close to land as possible. Lift your feet out of the kayak, stand up and stand up. As you step out of the kayak onto the dock, turn your body to face the dock and pull yourself out of the kayak.

Fortunately, many docking systems created today can easily accommodate kayakers of all levels and skill levels. Our passion for spending time on the water has led us to create floating kayak launch systems to make getting in and out of the water easy.
